Islamic Guidelines for Men’s Dress Code: A Clear and Practical Guide

by Momina Mukhtar

Muslim men wearing modest Islamic clothing, including a traditional white thobe and modern modest attire, standing in a respectful pose near a mosque.

Understanding how Muslim men should dress according to Islamic teachings isn’t just about tradition—it’s about intention, respect, and identity. This guide breaks down the main principles of men’s Islamic dress in a way that’s clear, authentic, and easy to follow.

Let’s walk through what makes clothing Islamically appropriate for men, with references from the Qur’an and authentic Hadiths, and how these timeless values fit into the modern world.

1. Avoid Wearing Silk or Gold

Islamic scholars have agreed that it’s forbidden (haram) for men to wear natural silk or gold, based on multiple authentic narrations. These materials are considered adornments specifically for women in Islamic law.

“The Prophet (ﷺ) took silk in his right hand and gold in his left, and said: ‘These two are forbidden for the males of my nation.’”
(Sunan Abi Dawood 4057 – Sahih, authenticated by Al-Albani)

Exceptions:

  • Artificial Silk: Modern neckties made from synthetic silk are allowed.
  • Medical Reasons: Natural silk can be permitted for those with skin conditions or other medical needs.

2. The Clothes Must Cover the ‘Awrah (Private Area)

For men, the minimum area that must be covered is from the navel to the knees. But coverage isn’t the only thing—how you cover matters too.

To be appropriate:

  • The clothing must not be tight—it shouldn’t outline the body.
  • It should not be transparent—skin or body shape should not be visible.

These two conditions help maintain modesty and prevent unnecessary exposure.

3. Avoid Imitating Non-Muslims

Islam strongly discourages mimicking the customs, styles, or symbols of non-Muslims, especially when they’re religious or culturally symbolic.

“Whoever imitates a people is one of them.”
(Sunan Abi Dawood 4031 – Hasan Sahih, authenticated by Al-Albani)

This includes:

  • Wearing clothing with religious symbols from other faiths.
  • Following specific fashion trends that contradict Islamic values.

4. Do Not Dress Like Women

Islam emphasizes the distinction between men and women in dress. Cross-dressing or wearing clothes typically associated with the opposite gender is strictly forbidden.

“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) cursed men who imitate women and women who imitate men.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 5885)

This applies to styles, fabrics, or accessories that are culturally and commonly known as female clothing.

5. The Garment Should Not Fall Below the Ankles

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ specifically warned against letting garments trail below the ankles, especially out of pride.

“I passed by the Prophet (ﷺ) while my lower garment was hanging low. He said: ‘O Abdullah, raise your garment.’ So I did. Then he said: ‘Raise it more.’ So I continued to observe that after.”
(Sahih Muslim 2086)

Why it matters: This isn’t just about length—dragging clothes was associated with arrogance, something Islam discourages in every form.

6. Avoid Extravagance and Waste

Islam encourages balance—even in clothing. Wearing expensive, luxurious clothing without need is seen as a form of excess.

“Indeed, the wasteful are brothers of the devils, and ever has Satan been to his Lord ungrateful.”
(Surah Al-Isra, 17:27)

So whether you’re rich or modest in means:

  • Dress according to your situation.
  • Avoid over-the-top spending or showiness.

7. Don’t Wear “Clothes of Fame”

“Clothing of fame” refers to garments worn to stand out, show off, or gain attention. Islam encourages humility—not spotlight.

“Whoever wears clothes to gain fame, Allah will dress him with a humiliating garment on the Day of Judgment, then set it ablaze.”
(Sunan Abi Dawood 4029 – Hasan)

The focus should be on modesty and humility, not self-glorification.
